VA363 – Veterinary Care Support Apprentice

We are looking for integral pieces of our veterinary team puzzle, in the shape of veterinary care support apprentices’ to join our teams in a number of our sites across the group.

About the role

Our Level 2 Veterinary Care Support (VCS) Apprenticeship role is an ideal stepping stone for those who see themselves in the veterinary care environment, with this qualification providing the initial key skills. Furthermore, this is a stepping stone for those looking for that next training step working ever closer to becoming a registered veterinary nurse.

This application is for our June cohort, and the course is delivered by our own Training College. Available positions are dependent on upcoming vacancies and cohorts.

The VCS positions are full-time consisting of 40 hours per week Monday to Friday, including your weekly college day plus a regular weekend rotation. If in a hospital position, there will also be a fair share bank holiday requirement. Prior animal care is preferred yet not essential, but would be advantageous. If you can demonstrate a passion for learning, teamwork, and providing the highest standard of patient and client care you will flourish.

The role is varied, involving and high level of client care which includes reception duties, the cleaning and upkeep of the practice and its equipment/facilities, and of course the hands-on patient care. You may be required to work across different branches within commutable distance, including the hospital sites.

This is an intense industry and profession that not only has physical challenges, but also emotional, and our veterinary colleagues must be able to adapt to this high pressured and unpredictable environment.

You will be working alongside experienced and compassionate teams who understand the need for investing time and training into our future registered nurses.

You will be fully supported by dedicated tutors who have worked in practice collectively for over 100 years, and we are incredibly proud of the training we provide.

It could also suit an RVN who has been used to a busy branch environment and wants to dip their toe into hospital life for a year to gain valuable experience in another domain.As a hospital RVN you will also help guide trainee nurses in their journey’s to becoming RVNs, and ensure the high clinical standards in consult, ward and theatre are being maintained, as well as being able to develop your own skills for future progression.As well as the large clinical team around you, and integral front of house team for client care support, you will be fully supported by the hospital’s nursing team, deputy head nurse, head nurse, head vet and hospital manager.As a hospital RVN some of your duties will include:– Carry out acting weekend Charge Nurse duties, as directed.- Advise clients of post-operative discharge instructions, verbally and with print-outs and appropriate literature as directed. Ensure that correct medications are provided.- Record details in clinical histories of any conversations with clients regarding fees, treatment options or anything related to patient care.- Ensure equipment is cleaned, packed, sterilised and stored correctly when not in use.- Carry out duties in accordance with shift guidance notes.- Complete and maintain accurate records of hospitalised patients.- Assist veterinary surgeons in theatre, with inpatient examinations and procedures and during consultations, as and when required.- Maintain a respectful and collaborative team environment – Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness, using standard operating procedures (SOPs) in all areas.

​Mandeville Veterinary Hospital and its surrounding clinics provide an excellent first opinion, emergency, critical care, and referral service and work to the highest clinical standards. As a result, you will have the opportunity to nurse a wide range of patients and conditions.There is state of the art diagnostic support at the hospital with a new CT scanner, a diploma holder in imaging providing our CT and ultrasound service, a strong medical team, and experienced surgeons routinely conducting advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue, and minimally invasive surgery during the day.This is a full-time Monday to Friday position, including a 1:5 weekend rotation with TOIL and up to 2 bank holidays per year.

There are no on-call requirements for this position.The location of Mandeville itself could not be more ideal for those relying on public transport, as Northolt station on the Central Line is a mere 6-minute walk away. In this riverside London village nestled in Southwest London, home to the starting point of the annual Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race is also home to our popular first opinion GP Putney clinic. The team are looking for a part-time vet to help in growing this popular Putney practice further.

About your new role!

​Our Putney practice location has a true London ‘village’ atmosphere, just a short walk from the River Thames, Putney High Street, and Putney Station.

The rota for this sole charge 2-day week position is Thursdays and Fridays to help round up the week, ready for our other fantastic vet to take over from Monday to Wednesday.

​Your rota is inclusive of a 1:3 branch Saturday and 1:10 hospital Sunday rotation, plus 1 bank holiday per year. There are NO on-call requirements.

​Our Putney team currently includes 1 associate vet (who has absolutely hit the ground running since starting!) and fantastic clinical support team who have a passion for building strong bonds with their established client base and providing exemplary patient care.

​We are going through a new era in Putney and are also recruiting for a senior RVN so you will have a blank page of a practice to build up as a new team. If you have a keen interest in diagnostic imaging, we have recently procured ultrasound facilities within the practice.

​You will be fully supported by a dedicated regional manager, and our 24-hour Stone Lion hospital that is just a 15-minute drive away, where you can refer more complex cases, and who also provide our OOH services.

​You will also have additional clinical support from our integral regional head vet Julie, who has a wealth of clinical and management knowledge to pass on.

If you are ready for a new challenge our Acton practice awaits! This unique GP practice is looking for an RVN who is wanting to step into a senior role and take the bull by the horns (so to speak!)

About your new role!This is a full-time 40-hourly week role including a 1:3 branch Saturday and 1:10 Sunday rotation at the nearby Mandeville Hospital in which you will receive time back for weekend days worked, plus 1-2 bank holidays per year at Mandeville Hospital.

There are no on-call requirements!

As a senior branch RVN some of your duties will include:

​- Responsible for the nursing team, ensuring the provision of a high quality and continually improving standards of nursing care.- Assist the veterinary surgeon in theatre and during consultations, as and when required.- Ensure the provision of a high quality and continually improving standard of nursing care, comfort and welfare of all pets in our care.- Utilise Schedule 3 skills, as directed.- Ensure all diagnostic, surgical and medical equipment and instruments are serviced as required, maintained well and in full working order.- Ensure that a weekly audit of Controlled Drugs is carried out in accordance with the prescribed protocol. – Responsible for staff working on reception, ensuring a high and improving standard of client care by means of excellent communication and service at all times.- Manage the daily operation of the reception area and ensure the friendly and efficient handling of clients and their pets, in person, by email and over the telephone.- Support student nurses as a clinical supervisor.

Ideally our new colleague will have prior leadership experience, but this is not essential and formal in-house leadership training will be provided. We are looking for a confident, experienced RVN who is ready to make the step up and really make this role their own working with and supporting a new team.

​Set in an old bank complete with its original vault (no gold bars unfortunately), Acton is well equipped with everything you would need day to day to complete a high standard of first opinion GP care. It has 2 consult rooms, and a separate colleague area for those much-needed lunch breaks.

​You will be working alongside a fantastic established support team and experienced vet who are incredibly engaged in their roles and are looking for leadership to propel the practice even further!

​You will also have the full support of an experienced regional manager who has worked in the group for years and takes their role in supporting their branches incredibly seriously with the upmost dedication.

​The nearby Mandeville Veterinary Hospital in Northolt provides out of hours support for Acton. It has state of the art 24 hr facilities including CT, an excellent ultrasound, scopes, laparoscopic equipment and an array of specialists.

The practice could not have a more ideal location, being literally opposite the Acton underground station on the Elizabeth “Lizzy” Tube Line, which takes you straight into Central and East London in one direction, and through to Heathrow airport in the other for those much-needed getaways!
